DID YOU KNOW?

  • Guys do have breast tissue behind the nipples on their chests.
  • Guy’s breasts vary in shape the same as girls do.
  • Our culture seems to place a premium on women looking like magazine models and men looking like professional athletes, which can sometimes make it really hard for the average guy to feel that they measure up.
  • For some guys it is really difficult when they get further from the ‘ideal’ for their gender, when they show characteristics that are seen as closely linked with the female gender such as protruding breasts.
  • The swelling or enlargement of guy breasts is called Gynecomastia and as many as 40% of boys experience this swelling around puberty, but it can happen to an adult as well.
  • Gynecomastia is related to hormone levels which can mean having more estrogen than androgens or even be more sensitivity to estrogen. It could also point to an underlying disease or maybe a side effect from some medication. So any doubts about anything, see your doctor.
  • When the breasts swell on a boy in puberty, it is not permanent. His breasts will decrease in size sometimes within weeks or sometimes taking longer but usually the maximum time for the reduction is about three years
  • When this is a different issue for the guy, it is best for him to see his doctor who may prescribe medications or in post puberty guys, plastic surgery.
  • If a guy is over weight, his breasts have increased in body fat but he can reduce this by losing weight and developing more chest or pec muscles.
  • The experts say that one of the side effects of substance abuse (e.g. alcohol, marijuana or heroin) could be enlarged breasts on a guy.
  • Taking ownership of your own body health will assist you to recognise changes when they occur in your body which could lead to early detection and therefore an increase in survival.
